Rich provides strategic vision and leadership at the intersection of law, technology, and data science. He is a former big-law partner and public company general counsel with deep technology expertise who focuses on the application of data science and innovative information and knowledge management technology to the business and practice of law.

Director of Knowledge Management – Sidley Austin LLP
September 2016 – September 2021 (5 years)

Rich established Sidley’s firm-wide Knowledge Management program. 

He initiated and led a broad range of practice specific and enterprise-wide initiatives, including the firm’s innovative next-generation enterprise search platform.  He also championed a variety of projects to install a more data-driven culture within the firm.

General Counsel and Corporate Secretary – Morningstar, Inc.
August 2005 – May 2015 (10 years) 

Rich was Morningstar’s first general counsel following its initial public offering in 2005. 

He built its legal department and served as a primary resource to management and the Board of Directors.

Associate and Partner – Sidley Austin Brown & Wood LLP
August 1991 – August 2005 (14 years)

Rich had a general corporate and securities law practice focused on the needs of U.S. publicly traded companies.  He served as a member of the firm’s Technology Committee, with a significant role in introducing new technology.

Senior Software Engineer / Knowledge Engineer – Digital Equipment Corporation
July 1985 – August 1988 (3 years)

Rich was a member of a consulting group specializing in artificial intelligence with a particular emphasis on rule-based expert systems and a member of a development team working on a programming language that is the ancestor of programming languages often used today in the artificial intelligence arena.
