Rich established Sidley’s firm-wide Knowledge Management program. 

He initiated and led a broad range of practice specific and enterprise-wide initiatives, including the firm’s innovative next-generation enterprise search platform.  He also championed a variety of projects to install a more data-driven culture within the firm.

General Counsel and Corporate Secretary – Morningstar, Inc.
August 2005 – May 2015 (10 years) 

Rich was Morningstar’s first general counsel following its initial public offering in 2005. 

He built its legal department and served as a primary resource to management and the Board of Directors.

Associate and Partner – Sidley Austin Brown & Wood LLP
August 1991 – August 2005 (14 years)

Rich had a general corporate and securities law practice focused on the needs of U.S. publicly traded companies.  He served as a member of the firm’s Technology Committee, with a significant role in introducing new technology.

Senior Software Engineer / Knowledge Engineer – Digital Equipment Corporation
July 1985 – August 1988 (3 years)

Rich was a member of a consulting group specializing in artificial intelligence with a particular emphasis on rule-based expert systems and a member of a development team working on a programming language that is the ancestor of programming languages often used today in the artificial intelligence arena.
